What is Fincremental OS?

Fincremental OS is a hybrid incremental-fish-shooter and simulated operating system! Shoot down fish from the comfort of your submarine to collect and sell them on the market for money, then pour those funds back into your business to make more cash! Everything you need is easy to access in the built-in operating system, but configure carefully: The desktop is your window to the ocean, so the more windows you can see, the less fish you can shoot. Arrange your perfect desktop to optimize your fishing flow (Or just keep it all closed. Nothing’s stopping you)!

Intent:

The intent of Fincremental OS is to provide a unique take on the incremental game formula by delivering an experience where the player is more actively engaged with real time gameplay rather than having a focus on an automation based "second monitor" core loop.

When onboarded as a UI/UX designer, I focused on:

  • Clarifying Readability

  • Visual Reworks

  • Game-UI Cohesion

Menu Reworks:

Reworked core menus (main menu, settings) to improve clarity and usability while expanding on functionality to better support player control.

My Contributions:

New Windows:

Designed new UI systems to help players understand game mechanics, including an in-game codex that presents complex information clearly.

Gameplay Feedback:

Implemented reactive UI elements to provide immediate feedback and achiviements to reinforce player actions.

Implementing New UI With Existing Gameplay

Step2:

This concept got approved, so I began implementation. But it was soon clear that the Main Page was not readable and felt disconnected with the rest of the codex and testers agreed.

Step 1:

The team really fell in love the idea of the codex emulating a wiki page. To achive this I concepted an “content” page where specific information would be found and a main page.

Step 3:

To solve this, I proposed using the same layout as the content page to make the main page feel more cohesive. This layout change would also solve the reability and usibility problems that came with the old design.

Reworking and Iterating

One problem that existed within the game was the lack of information telling the player how some windows work. To solve this problem it was decided that a codex of different aspects of the game would be added as a way for players to learn more.
